On May 13th 2026, the public works community recognized the many individual achievements and project successes of 2025. Over 300 people attended this year’s OPWA Awards luncheon held in Mississauga, and the event was a tremendous success. In total, thirty-two (32) awards were handed out this year. The luncheon was an inspiring afternoon dedicated to the celebration of excellence in public works across Ontario, shining a spotlight on the individuals and organizations shaping our communities through infrastructure.

One of the highlights of the luncheon was our keynote speaker, Ted Betts, Head of the Infrastructure and Construction Group at Gowling WLG. Ted’s talk, “Where to Next? Current Trends in Construction,” offered insights into what’s next for infrastructure, contracts, funding, and more.

Another highlight was honouring the Top Public Works Leader of the Year, a very prestigious award offered to very few in public works. The 2025 award was given to Helen Noehammer, Director of Works, Operations and Maintenance for the City of Mississauga, with over 28 years of experience in transportation and municipal engineering.

The timing of this year’s event was a perfect lead-up to National Public Works Week (NPWW) 2026. This year’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works.

A big thank you to all who participated and contributed to this year’s OPWA Awards luncheon, with special note of thanks to the OPWA Awards Committee for determining the award recipients and for planning a successful event.

Hope to have everyone make a nomination or two for next year’s OPWA Awards!
