Public Works Project of the Year for Small Municipalities Award

This OPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing projects completed by small municipalities. It also recognizes the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together complete public works projects.

Technical Innovation Award

To recognize an individual, team, or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the delivery of public works services to the public. A technical innovation involves materials, design, and equipment.

Top Public Works Leader of the Year Award

The Top Public Works Leaders of the Year award seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in public service by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of individual public works professionals and officials, from both the public and private sectors. The primary focus of the award is on career service to the public works profession rather than on any one single event or project.

OPWA Values Statement – OPWA supports and promotes a fully diverse workforce, equitable employment opportunities and an inclusive work environment for all public works organizations across Ontario and in the delivery of public works services to the communities that our members serve. OPWA is committed to incorporating these values in the makeup of our organization, its culture and function, and in the operation of activities we undertake on behalf of our membership.

Members of OPWA, and Indigenous nations, municipalities and private organizations who provide public works services will be recognized for their outstanding leadership supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in their organizations and in the services that they provide to communities.

Joe Johnson Sr Private Sector Service Award

Established (2001) to acknowledge the important role the private sector plays in providing public works facilities and services. This award recognizes outstanding individual achievement through chapter activity and outstanding corporate achievement in support of the association’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives.

Wally Wells Young Leader Award

Established (2001) to recognize and encourage young OPWA members who have demonstrated an initial commitment to the profession and the association and show potential for future growth within the association. The award promotes the concept that length of career does not necessarily indicate leadership abilities or potential for service.

Pat (Patricia) McDonald Distinguished Community Involvement Award

Established (2000) in memory of Pat McDonald to recognize Public Works professionals who are also leaders in their community. To encourage Public Works professionals to become active leaders in their community. To instill public trust through recognition of outstanding community leadership by Public Works professionals. To set the example for other Public Works professionals to emulate.

This award was created to recognize individuals within the Public Works profession who perpetuate the spirit and unselfish devotion and commitment to one’s community that was exemplified by Pat McDonald during her lifetime. Pat volunteered much of her adult life to work with those less fortunate, the elderly, the physically and mentally challenged, children with learning disabilities, as well as minor hockey, girls baseball and figure skating associations. Pat’s affiliation with APWA spanned many years during which she was active in organizing the Ontario Chapter Spouses Program at the Annual APWA Congress and Exposition. Her memory and commitment to the needs of others will always remain entrenched in this Award.

Terry Hardy Exemplary Service Award

The Terry Hardy Exemplary Service Award was established in 2019 in memory of Terry Hardy who was active in the Ontario Chapter throughout his career. He served in numerous roles including Chapter President and also as the Executive Director.

OPWA Supplier and Service Provider of the Year Award

Established (2018) to acknowledge the important role that suppliers and service providers play in providing public works facilities and services. This award recognizes outstanding corporate achievement by a supplier or service provider in support of the association’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives.

This award presents an exciting opportunity for suppliers and service providers to showcase their contribution and the valuable work they provide to Public Works.

OPWA Operations Hero Award

Our public works professionals are in the field every day dealing with a multitude of tasks. This award is to recognize the hard working individuals that have done something extraordinary or heroic. They have made a difference by responding to a citizen in distress, a major event or lifting up their team in a way not typically expected. OPWA wants to recognize the great commitment and dedication these front line workers have shown to their communities, peers and employers.
